Asociacion Kantaya: A first-time grantee in 2022-23

Kantaya’s mission is to promote quality education and holistic development for children living in impoverished communities in Peru through two flagship programs.  The Kantaya After School program empowers children to achieve their dreams through an intellectual and socio-emotional after-school learning program.  Podera trains teacher assistant candidates with coaching and mentoring, and provides a certification granted by the World Organization for Early Childhood Education.

Peru faces an educational crisis due to lack of quality teachers. This unsatisfied demand leads to dependence on unqualified teaching assistants or on single classes of different levels of students that are detrimental to learning. Podera prepares teaching assistants to fill this need through a set of virtual modules: workshops on socio-emotional skills, presentations on technical skills and employability, and sessions of personalized coaching, all taught by professional experts. The program is available to trainees via cell phone or tablet in zoom calls with the professors. To reach the most vulnerable populations, Podera is also creating an Educational Loans Program with an option to repay the tuition fees upon certification.

Podera assists Peruvian women who face economic barriers and disparity, limited access to higher education, and lack of opportunity for personal and professional growth, to qualify for teaching assistant positions. This is also important in helping Venezuelan women who have migrated to Peru looking for a better life.

GRANT SUMMARY AND PURPOSE

2022-2023:  A $30,000 grant will help fund the expansion of Podera to target 182 participants this year to be trained, certified and able to find employment that significantly increases their income.  Kantaya is also working on an alliance with organizations helping Venezuelan migrants, with the aim of providing scholarships to open the program to more migrant women. In addition, a grant of $2,883 in unrestricted funding has been awarded to support this mission.

IMPACT

Kantaya is increasing the quality of education in Peru through an after-school program for children in impoverished communities and a training program to prepare teaching assistants to help fill the need for qualified educators to teach the children.  Through teaching assistant jobs, women earn income that improves their lives, and better teachers improve the education and longer-term opportunities for children in Peru.
