Inoma:   A first-time grantee in 2020

Inoma was founded in 2011 to address the widening educational, digital, and economic gap facing under-resourced students worldwide, with an initial focus on Spanish speakers.  Its mission is twofold: (1) to provide free educational tools that allow students to learn at their own pace deployed in Spanish, English, and native languages and (2) to promote the use of information technology for education and research.  Teachers gain access to a wider selection of content and can adopt new teaching methods and pedagogical strategies to better serve their students.  This will mitigate educational gaps and help each child master key skills.

Since its launch, Inoma has created 100 (out of 200) educational video games (TAK-TAK-TAK www.taktaktak.com) for elementary school students, attracting over 713,000 cumulative users worldwide.  Inoma’s current thrust is to enhance their tool that helps teachers plan classes and exchange tips with peers (LabTak www.labtak.mx). LabTak, developed by a strong team of software developers and education specialists, is the only platform available in Spanish that allows teachers to design their own lesson plans and consult real-time reports.  The opportunity to engage with peers to share ideas and compare results further enhances teacher effectiveness.

TAK-TAK-TAK has proven to significantly improve academic performance in standardized tests and has been successfully applied not only in Latin America, but also in Africa (a refugee camp in Uganda and in Nairobi), and has been used freely in over 40 countries. Since the onset of this pandemic the site has increased viewership threefold and doubled session durations, highlighting the importance of educational digital offerings.
