Changing Lives with Improved Ovens

Location: Nicaragua

Emerging Opportunities for Sustainability (EOS):  Grantee in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

EOS is based in Nicaragua, the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. In a nation where families often burn kerosene or diesel fuel for light, use open fires for cooking, and live without convenient access to clean drinking water, the mission of EOS is to provide rural communities with low-cost technologies that generate income, improve health, and preserve and enhance the environment.  Installation of any new technology tool is backed up by training and then results are monitored to ensure that the expected positive results can be realized. EOS also manufactures products with locally sourced materials that are easily repairable to ensure its efforts can be sustained.

One important technology is a safer alternative to traditional ovens made by using a metal barrel supported by bricks and rebar.  This design allows for continuous baking and requires 92% less wood.  This more efficient oven not only is more environmentally friendly but often becomes a springboard to entrepreneurial and social opportunities through baking and selling goods.  An EOS study found that women who started mini-bakery businesses increased their household income on average by over 80%, improving their standard of living.  In many cases, the bakeries also generated additional local jobs. Together, the higher income and new job creation, strengthen communities.

There are over 400 ovens in operation, and more than 150 mini-bakeries have been started.  This success is driving expansion efforts.
