Frequently Asked Questions for Project Redwood Donors

Why should I donate to Project Redwood?

You will be joining the hundreds of GSB alumni who collaborate to fight poverty. You will make a tangible, lasting difference by helping rise from poverty.
Since its inception, Project Redwood has provided $4.5 million in financial capital and in kind support to help almost 1 million people worldwide improve the quality of their lives.

There are two funds: Global Fund and US Only Fund. How are gifts made to those funds used?

Global Fund: Donations to the Global Fund are used to fund non-profits in both the United States and anywhere around the world.

US Only Fund: Gifts made to the US Only fund are restricted for use in the United States.

Your Options: You may give to either or both funds.

Once I donate to Project Redwood, do I have any say in how those funds are used?

Yes. Donors who become Members by donating $250 are invited to participate in the annual online voting for new grantees, based on recommendations from our Grant Review committee. Our Board of Directors then makes the final decision using input from both our Member vote and the Grant Review Committee.

Is Project Redwood an organization that we expect to be sustained for many years to come?

Yes. While Project Redwood was founded in 2006 by a single class, it has now expanded to all GSB alumni, including 30 classes spanning 50 years. More than half the Board of Directors and volunteers are alumni from non-founding classes.

Why don’t I see Charity Navigator information for Project Redwood?

While Project Redwood meets two of Charity Navigator’s criteria for non-profits  (revenues of over $1 million and  headquartered in the US), nonprofits are not rated by Charity Navigator until they have been an independent non-profit for seven years. We became an independent 501c3 in July 2023.  Before that, we operated with a fiscal sponsor.

When I give to Project Redwood, am I supporting the GSB?

Project Redwood is not a part of the Graduate School of Business.  However, the GSB is supportive of Project Redwood in many ways. We operate as an independent organization of GSB alumni.  Our Board members and volunteers manage the organization.
