Providing Educational and Vocational Training

Youth and Child Visionary Ministries (YCVM), based in Uganda, was founded in 2005 with a mission to provide education and vocational training to vulnerable youth. The underserved communities in the Kumi, Ngora, and Bukedea districts of Uganda are still struggling to overcome the ravages of civil war, epidemics, and neglect that have persisted for over 40 years. As a result, most young people lack the schooling and training that prepares them for employment that would break the cycle of poverty and its related societal problems that the majority of residents endure.
That is what has made education and job training integral to everything that YCVM does. At the core of its programming is the Kumi Christian Visionary School (KCVS); it currently operates classes for students from pre-school through primary school grades and serves over 200 students annually. But realizing that many students cannot afford to continue their studies and/or otherwise are prevented from returning to school beyond that point, YCVM is now setting up a series of vocational training programs specifically designed to help youth, young mothers, and orphans master valuable blue-collar skills. With such skills, the goal is that participants can go to find jobs or start businesses that will lead to a higher quality of living. These programs will be scheduled during the one-month school breaks that occur between the three annual school terms and take advantage of access to the KCVS primary school campus/building. Training classes would teach such in-demand skills as carpentry, sewing and tailoring, bricklaying and masonry, plumbing, and hair dressing. Following completion of the program, graduates would be connected to job opportunities in local villages and beyond.

GRANT SUMMARY AND PURPOSE
2024: A grant of $10,000 will be used to launch the vocational training programs for youth in need. The funds will be used to pay for equipment and instructors. As staff will be drawn from local residents, the grant benefits both participants and instructors who supplement their current income.
2025: A grant of $30,000 will increase Kumi Christian Visionary Vocational Institute’s vocational training to help vulnerable youth in the poor rural Kami area (65% of residents living below the poverty line). This training has been proven to reduce poverty and provide sustainable income, thus helping their families. Envisioned initially as 100 students in 6 courses, the program expanded and is now completing its first year with 250 students and nine courses. Students will take exams and earn Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT) certificates, which are official documents showing progress in their education. These certificates are a significant step in earning income from their job skills training.
GOAL
Through classroom education for children and vocational training that prepares youth and young adults for employment, YVCM seeks to overcome the persistent neglect and societal problems and enhance the future prospects for those living in poverty-stricken areas of Uganda.
