Former Project Redwood Grantee, Compatible Technology International (CTI) has been awarded a $2.2 million grant from the United States Agency for International Development.  CTI spent several years working with locals in Senegal to develop a low cost thresher that farmers will use to separate whole grains from other plant materials.  The $400 portable machine is expected to reduce post-harvest processing time by up to 90%, which, according to the Minneapolis StarTribune, has Senegalese women who package and sell millet products dancing for joy.  CTI will use their multi-year grant to work with co-ops and farmers to market and distribute the threshers.
