What We Do Founded in 1999, the Zambian Children’s Fund (ZCF) supports a growing number of orphaned children whose lives are at risk from drought, starvation and disease (HIV/AIDS and malaria) in southern Africa. ZCF endeavors to create a self-sustaining village to nurture upwards of 500 orphans by providing them with housing, clothing, nutrition and education. Our grant provided equipment and supplies for the Chishawasha agricultural and craft skills center in Lusaka. The center will offer hands-on training in carpentry, poultry production, tailoring, fabric printing and electronics repair. Its teachers include licensed craftsmen, trained poultry managers and entrepreneurs who teach business and marketing skills. Graduates will have the ability to secure gainful employment in the Zambian economy. The center will be self-funded using income from sales of its products within four years. A seasoned philanthropist participated in our brainstorming session with ZCF and provided several suggestions for broadening their funding base. Other professional associates provided contacts to help ZCF establish distribution for their chitenga fabrics in the United States.
