Acholi children Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.

Nuru International

With Special Forces experience and first-hand exposure to third-world poverty, a recent GSB grad founded Nuru International to eradicate extreme poverty by empowering rural communities to achieve self-sufficiency and inspiring the developed world to confront the crisis of extreme poverty. "Nuru" (pronounced new-roo) means "light" in the Kiswahili language. In some parts of East Africa, its meaning is analogous to hope.

Nuru pursues its mission via three strategic goals:

  • Partnering with rural communities to create sustainable solutions in five main areas: agriculture, healthcare, education, water & sanitation, and small business development
  • Partnering with corporations, religious organizations, universities and other interested parties to send volunteer teams on short-term work trips
  • Measuring and evaluating progress using unbiased third parties and a standarized metric system

The Project Redwood grant provides loans for rainwater catchment devices to support 2,500 people in Kuria, Kenya. Repayments from increased crop yields will finance investment in future projects.
