God is in the slums, in the cardboard boxes where the poor play house... God is in the debris of wasted opportunity and lives, and God is with us if we are with them. – Bono |
Founded in 1991, HOPE Worldwide delivers sustainable, high-impact, community-based services to the poor and needy. HOPE Foundation, the Indian affiliate, serves the poor in 22 Indian cities and towns, providing health care, education, vocational training and disaster relief.
Our first grant supported a child survival initiative orchestrated by HOPE Foundation in partnership with USAID and the Indian government in the urban slums of Delhi. This program addressed the high rate of infant and child mortality through: pre-natal care, immunizations, and safe deliveries for pregnant women; training in basic hygiene and home remedies for heretofore life-threatening ailments (e.g., diarrhea and pneumonia); and, access to healthcare professionals.
Our second grant launched a microloan program that enabled 500 people to start small businesses during the first year of operation. Business owners received training and mentoring to help their enterprises prosper. A third grant will provide early exposure to computers to increase access to employment and income.
To date, we've explored several possibilities for non-financial support, including: in-country film production to disseminate health information, field internships to address skilled labor shortages and use of products created by Stanford's Entrepreneurial Design for Extreme Affordability class. HOPE also seeks assistance with business planning and development of micro-financing capital sources.
